Welcome back and details for this week.

Welcome back!

We hope you all had a great Easter break.

This term PE will continue to be on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please make sure your child comes in the correct kit for this.

Additionally, for this term we have Forest School happening on Thursdays. Your child should come to school wearing appropriate outdoor wear (that you don’t mind getting wet and muddy!) with a change of clothes / shoes in a bag should they need them.

Homework went home today. The children need to complete section 1 test 11 for their Maths and the 11th reading comprehension. This is due in on Monday.

Thank you for your continued support.

Snow Day work

Good morning all,

I hope you are all safe and well this morning at home. Here is some work for you to do today whilst at home.

English

Research about the life of Ernest Shackleton as part of our study this term into his life. Can you produce a biography about his life? This link will help with your writing:

https://kids.britannica.com/kids/article/Ernest-Henry-Shackleton/598856

Alternatively, you may wish to research the life of a different famous explorer. For example, Christopher Columbus, Scott and Amundsen or Neil Armstrong.

Art

Using the front cover and pictures below, and thinking about Antarctica, can you produce a piece of art work, with a focus on the theme of ice and snow. This could be a sculpture outside today using the snow, or use different art styles: charcoal, pencil for sketching or painting if you have these available at home.

Science

Investigate Insulators

Compare clothing you might wear today to keep yourselves warm. How does this compare with what explorers would have worn in the 1900s. What was their clothing made from? What did Shackleton and his crew wear on their adventure?

Geography

Discover where Antarctica is on a world map. What are the conditions like there? Can you identify the key physical features and environmental concerns around this area. Think about our previous geography topic on sustainability. What is being done in Antarctica to try and protect it?

Maths

Revise fractions of amounts, which we have completed on Monday and Tuesday this week with myself and Mr Dickens. The Maths work is attached below for you to try and do.

Have a great day and stay safe!

Kent Life Victorian Day

Year 5 had a fantastic trip to Kent Life on Friday, looking at what life was like in the Victorian era. This built on everything we have been studying this term – the Industrial Revolution in History and reading Street Child in English, a text based on the true story of a child living in Victorian Britain.

Some photographs from our trip are below!

Term 3 so far…

It has been a really busy couple of weeks in Emerald. The children have continued to participate in Music lessons, learning the xylophone with our music specialist. The children have also continued with their PE lessons with Mr Lopez, developing different coordination skills.

We have started reading ‘Street Child,’ a book based on a true story about a boy, who is forced to live in a workhouse in Victorian England.  This is something we will continue to learn more about in preparation for our class trip to Kent Life soon.

Key reminders for this week:

Tuesday and Thursday – in full PE kits.

** Please could the children also come in PE kits on Friday for this week only, as the children have an extra PE session on Friday morning. Mrs Massey will be sending out further information about this tomorrow.

Happy New Year

Myself, Miss Harding and Mrs Daniels hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and New Year and have enjoyed the break. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your cards and gifts.

This term PE will continue to be on every Tuesday (with Mr Lopez) and Thursday. Biking has finished now, but we will continue to take part in PE on a Thursday afternoon. Please ensure your child comes to school in full PE kit on these days and a black tracksuit now that it is cold.

This will start from this week.

We look forward to welcoming you all back tomorrow!

Our Christmas Song

For our Christmas Service next week the children at St Edmund’s will be singing some different Christmas songs. Year 5 will be singing ‘Little Drummer Boy.’ The version that we will be singing is attached below, so that the children can practice at home.

I will be sending home this evening copies of the lyrics of the song to help the children learning it. This will be accompanied by their new homework books, which were given to the children last week. This week they are to complete Section 1 Test 2 in Maths and the 2nd reading text.

Please ensure all homework books are returned on Monday morning, even if your child does not manage to complete their homework.
